Acupuncture Can Help with Seasonal Allergies

It may come as a surprise, but acupuncture can help treat seasonal allergies! Itchy eyes and runny noses occur all year round, despite being coined “seasonal allergies.” Allergy medicine doesn’t always do the trick, but there are some natural approaches that you can take to help get some allergy relief – like acupuncture.

Allergic rhinitis, also known more commonly as seasonal allergies, is a non-infectious inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa, which is mainly released by immunoglobulin mediators after contact with allergens. Allergy sufferers know how miserable seasonal symptoms can be, but with acupuncture there can be some relief. For some, acupuncture treatments can be enough to relieve uncomfortable symptoms like sneezing and nasal congestion. Those who have mild allergy symptoms, acupuncture has been shown to reduce their symptoms greatly.

The acupuncture points used for allergies will be different than those specified for say, back pain or headaches. For allergies, acupuncture points may be located on the front of the body, like the front of the hand, feet, around the nose and face, or on the ears. Research suggests that acupuncture changes levels of certain proteins and hormones in the body that play a role in inflammation. This may change the activity of immune cells that also play a role in inflammation. Here are some reasons to consider acupuncture for allergy relief:

·        It’s all-natural
·        It boosts immunity
·        It relieves stress
·        It helps you breathe a bit easier

In addition to acupuncture, there are other safe, natural ways to manage allergies. Nasal irrigation, plenty of time in the sun for vitamin D, local natural honey, and even some allergy medicines are good ways to help manage seasonal allergies at home. With allergy season in full swing, consulting with Dr. April Harris can never be a bad call.
